If you lose your oil cap, oil could potentially splash out as the engine is running. You would see smoke and smell oil burning as it hit the hot exhaust manifolds of your engine. You can buy an new cap at your dealership or a good aftermarket cap from your local aftermarket supplier of automotive products. Cap from the oil bottle when I was topping it up, and took a couple of hours to locate it and get it back out again as it didn't fall through (it was outside and dark too). Hi, I just dropped the plastic oil cap from a quart of oil into the place where you pour oil --- I looked right away for it and couldn't see it at all. I drove a mile home and used a long bore scope (for guns) and still can't see the dang thing. I am positive it went in. What should I do An oil soaked rag under the hood is a great way to light your car on fire. By putting tape around the rag and using the rag as an impromtu filter, the air pressure of the crank case vacuum will prevent the oil from saturating the rag. Get a new oil cap immediately. Then get an oil change. You're getting all sorts of dust and shit in your engine because the oil system normally operates under vacuum, meaning that it's sucking unfiltered air into the crank case when you drive without an oil cap. The engine oil can get dispersed all over the engine compartment as oil pressure is 40-60 psi and makes one heck of a mess and can, potentially be, a fire hazard. Running it too long without the cap can disperse enugh oil out of the engine where there will not be the minimum amount of oil in it to prevent damage to crankshaft bearings and camshaft lobes.
